Most of us think of physical assault when the issue of domestic violence is mentioned. However, many women are brutalized by tactics of power and control that cripple them mentally and emotionally without a single trip to the hospital. This is one such story. Maxine and her children lived with a man who controlled every aspect of their lives. The end result of ten grueling years of abuse was three completely destroyed lives. This is a story of not only the years of abuse, but of the recovery and hope that this family now so courageously shares.

Holy Smokes, Maxine!!

It is hard to come up with words that explain how I am feeling.

I can hear your Mom bursting out with "Hallelujah!!" over and over again. I suspect that she desperately wanted to find a way to reach out to help you. Clearly such help wasn't possible until you unwound all the mind controlling lies and manipulations that closed off all outside voices.

But she also would be in a stream of her own tears for getting such a close-up view of the horrors you've experienced and the endless pain you've endured.

Being locked away in prison for ten years would have been a heck of a lot more pleasant experience. At least your sanity couldn't have been actively whittled away.

You were enslaved to a much greater degree than the millions of suffering Islamic women. If "John" could have gotten away with it, I'm sure he would have had you in a Burka all the time as well.

In fact there is a strong parallel with how Muslim men use their religion to enslave their women and what John did with using yours.

I doubt it could have ever have happened if you weren't so devoutly religious. Normal folks would have ran away from his contorted religious manipulations. But, like all really good con-men, he tapped into your values to connect you to his ends. And after repeated squashing, you had no ability anymore to see clearly or fight back.

The Commies in Hanoi couldn't have done a better job at mind control. It really is miraculous that you finally broke free. How you avoided physical harm or even death was a freak occurrence. And as you note, had it not for the fear of being expelled hanging over him, you would have wound up like thousands of other battered women: in the hospital or the morgue.

The guy really should be in prison. People that have murdered have often done far less harm.

The last chapter was a glorious celebration after your wrenching story. Hearing of all the false alarms going off in your head from NORMAL every day interactions were joyously funny and a much-needed relief. If anyone has ever deserved a much better life, it clearly is you.

Thank you for sharing your amazing story. It provides valuable insight into the mind and mechanisms of all controlling manipulators. Plus it provides incredible value in its story of hope and motivations to others to escape their own hell.

I plowed through it in two days and my wife is now engrossed reading it. I hope that the effort to produce it, is now giving you the ability to throw it all behind you.

Years of Tears eBook Maxine Browne Reviews

I bought this book for my daughter but couldn't put it down myself and have since recommended it to friends I think could benefit.
It's a story, a text book and a conversation in how the wounds from domestic violence can be healed. I couldn't put the book down. I learned a lot about domestic violence. I'm inspired by the story. Even if domestic violence is not apart of your past or present, it's worth reading. You never know when you'll need to be a support to someone going through this. Also, its a great guide into the cycle of abuse and how to watch for signs that you are dating someone who uses abusive tactics. Great ending and worth $15.
Maxine Browne's Years of Tears documents her relationship with John. What makes this book unique is that it not only gives the perspective of Maxine's account, but her daughters share their thoughts about Maxine's relationship. Not too many books allow for the children to share their thoughts on this, but this one does and makes the story insightful.

Thank you Maxine for not only addressing Domestic Violence, but also Emotional Violence (both topics are rarely discussed in today's society).
If I had not known how it turned out I would have had to read the book all at once...it is a must read for any one that has ever suffered or known some one who has suffered from spousal abuse...thanks for sharing your story...
This well written story details the many years of struggle, that a woman and her children faced, until they gained their freedom, from an abusive man. Domestic violence presents in many forms, having the courage to share a personal story to the world, helps others understand the dynamics of these relationships. Support for individuals involed in abusive relationships is very limitited. Every story shared brings us one step closer to breaking the cycle of abuse. This is a must read!
My review of Maxine Browne's book

I just completed Maxine Browne's book "YEARS OF TEARS"...One Family's Journey Through Domestic Violence. Maxine's daughter Janice was 15 when she left the house. She described her pain and how she wanted to kill her ABUSER. On page 89 she describes her horrors from age 11-15 as "Four years worth of s***."

The very notion that an ABUSER morphed into a well dressed minister when being interviewed by social services; or, could use religion to coerce church leaders to help keep his marriage "intact per his interpretation of scripture"..is simply despicable. This book is compelling because Maxine's story of psychological abuse was told in conjunction with what her children experienced during the same various time periods.

I was only halfway through this book and I wondered why Maxine did not go stark raving mad along with the behavioral demise of her children. This Monster disciplined Maxine's children at one point by having them do landscaping trenching with a spoon and scissors. Religiously dutiful at that time Maxine truly wanted her marriage to work in the eyes of GOD and man, so in hindsight she allowed this to happen.

Of course, Maxine's hindsight is 20/20 now as she crusades on behalf of Domestic Abuse. I have written her privately to commend her work and to encourage her continued advocacy. Her family is better but still healing (a miracle perhaps).

I do recommend reading "YEARS of TEARS". You will feel for Maxine and shed a tear for the children especially for Janice, the one who tried to fight back in vain.
A riveting story, and insights into family violence. It talks about the warning signs to look out for ...the same ones that she missed, and the devastating affects it had on her and her family for years to come. It tells about her recovery after leaving the abusive marriage and how she she rebuilt her life. It is a story of hope & courage. I could not put it down.
