This is an interesting book. It tells the story of the sexual and religious development (and adventures) of a "city kid" (to quote the subtitle) who becomes a Catholic priest, leaving him, at the end of the tale, at a crucial point in his religious and sexual maturity. It is not a memoir, the author makes clear in a very good postscript, but rather a novel based on a "composite life story" of Catholic priests who grew up before, and entered the priesthood around, the start of Vatican II. These merged details from American priestly life from the 1960s and later make for compelling and revealing anecdotes but weaken the narrative structure of the book by making it too episodic. Nor is the protagonist's motivation always clear. That's unfortunate because a kind of religious longing, far more than a sexual urge, is what keeps driving him. He tries to find his way in the turmoil that descended upon an American Catholic Church intellectually and spiritually unprepared for the changes of Vatican II. The protagonist's struggles aren't made easier by the enormous vacuum of leadership he finds in the ranks of American bishops, who are portrayed in more than one instance as image-conscious "organization men", sometimes none too sexually respectable themselves. Although based on the experiences of clergymen, this book is a work of fiction, but for an American Catholic of a certain age it has the uncomfortable ring of truth.Product details

Beneath the Stairs Joseph A Sanches 9781475015812 Books Reviews
This book is a well written thriller about a subject that"s making headlines daily! Great ending.Recommended for discerning mature adults who enjoy good literature.
In an age of new found clerical abuse of children this is a must read thriller that show the consequences of an unchecked cancer in our society. It's a story filled with intrigue, sexualmisadventure and ultimate redemption. It is a tale that should be told time and again.
Based on one man's years of experience counseling with hundreds of Catholic priests who have left the ministry, this novel traces the roots of sexual dysfunction in the world of the celibate lifestyle and then wanders into the horrible years of clergy sexual abuse of youth. It is a must-read! "Beneath the Stairs" is an absolute page-turner and a masterful story of the strange world confronting the clergy after the confluence in the 1960's of the Catholic Church's revolution during the turbulent Vatican Council era alongside the tumultuous years of the American sexual revolution. Brilliant and thrilling!
THIS SECOND BOOK BY JOSEPH SANCHES IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TWIST THAN HIS PREVIOUS STORY. WHILE THE FIRST WAS AN UNUSUAL MURDER MYSTERY THIS IS A TIMELY STORY BASED ON THE HORRENDOUS CRIME IF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE WHICH HAS COME TO THE FORE IN THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. SURPRISINGLY IT IS CENTERED IN THE ONCE REVERED HOLLOWED HALLS OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN FOUND TO BE INSTEAD DENS OF INIQUITY. CLERGY OF EVERY RANK AND DENOMINATION STAND ACCUSED WITH UNSPEAKABLE CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN AND THIS STORY EXPOSES THESES CRIMES IN SOMEWHAT GRAPHIC DETAIL IN THE HOPE OF BRINGING THE POINT HOME TO THE READER. THERE IS NO ATTEMPT OF SHELTERING THE TRUTH HERE BUT RATHER THE CLOAK OF RESPECTABILITY IS TORN FROM MEN WHOM WE HAVE TRUSTED WITH OUR YOUNG AND NOW STAND ACCUSED OF HEMOPHILIA. . ISN'T A NEW CRIME BUT THIS IS A NEW STORY THAT THE CLOAK OF RESPECTABILITY IS TORN FROM MEN WHOM WE HAVE TRUSTED WITH OUR YOUNG AND NOW STAND ACCUSED OF HEMOPHILIA IT IS'NT A NEW CRIME BUT THIS A NEW STORY THAT CAN HAPPEN IN ANY HOME,IN ANY CHURCH OR ANY BUSINESS.
A youths coming of age in an era of sexual and religious revolution. At times both heart-breaking and hilarious, Mr Sanches' new novel is always absorbing. A radical departure from the authors previous novel, The Sacred Scam, Mr. Sanchez demonstrates that no matter what the topic, he's a master in command of his craft. This book is quite frankly a tour de force.
It is hard to imagine some of the occurances that transpired at such a young age. Yet, in light of the revelations that have surfaced in todays world,it is really about another time and the innocense of that time. I was very much taken by the approach and maner to the subject and the life of a learned man who developed from a difficult youth into adulthood with no malace or thought of reproach. I would certainly be interested in future books by this author.
In Beneath the Stairs, Joseph Sanches artfully and insightfully describes the life struggle of Father Donald Restrepo, a New York City kid, who is pulled paradoxically to both "prophecy and prostitution." Despite his increasing disdain for organized religion, Donald continually finds himself drawn to the "directive of love and service" over the "message of power and control." Sanches brilliantly portrays in Beneath the Stairs the mysterious attraction of the Spirit working in and manifesting itself through the dysfunctional humanity of the Church.
